Default Temp Gauge at 1/4, no heater

Hello all -have had a problem for about 4 years now - the temperature gauge goes to about 1/4 way and stays there, tho will go up to 1/2 way after stopping on a hot day - in the winter the heater does not work. Hasn't been too much of a problem until living in a colder climate. Thoughts?
Thanks much!

Not hard. Don't overtighten and be sure to bleed properly.

I can get away with just replacing the thermostat and not the housing, yes? Will need a new gasket regardless.

Many thanks for your help

Depends - if you have an M42 engine, yes. If you have the M44 engine, no; you'll have to buy the entire housing/thermostat assembly. I believe the M42 had an aluminum thermostat housing, as well.

I've tried to locate just the thermostat insert for the plastic housing, but was unsuccessful. It does easily remove just by twisting and unlocking. I've searched the PN on the thermostat element itself and even emailed the company that makes it, they never got back to me.

If you've got the M44 and can find a source for that thermostat element, you'll be a hero in the 'ti community. It's hard for me to believe that there isn't another vehicle that uses just that element.
