Default HOW-TO: Install DICE HD Radio Kit

DO NOT ORDER YET, STILL WORKING OUT ISSUES WITH EAS!

The stealth antenna is not compatible with type of antenna design. We are currently testing a module for these models.

I'll update this as the installation proceeds.

First, let's take a look at what we get in the various kits.

1. DICE HD Radio Kit (R17 Harness Configuration) - allows direct connection to the BMW head unit (BMW Business CD or Business Cassette) instead of the CD-changer connections in the hatch

DICE HD Radio Connections and Dip Switches

Wiring harness for direct head unit connection

Standard (included) connection cable (for CD-changer controls) which will not be used in this install

2. DICE Extension Cable (6 foot)

3. Dice iPod connection cable

4. EAS Stealth HD Antenna (can either replace DICE HD antenna or be used in conjunction with it to enhance reception even more)

5. BMW Business CD Radio Antenna Adapter (needed if you use the Stealth HD antenna and have the older style stock antenna lead - see pic below)

Only needed if you have this old style stock antenna lead

Install Steps

Step 1: Remove Glove Box
http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8116

Step 2: Remove Center Console
Need to create KB article on this yet.

Step 3: Remove Storage Partition
Need to create KB article on this yet.

Step 4: Remove Knee Bolster (US market)
Remove three 10mm bolts that attach the knee bolster to the metal brackets (see locations indicated in picture)

Step 5: Mark and Drill Holes in Knee Bolster (US Market)
Place DICE HD Radio as far to the left side (as you're facing it, see pic below) as close to the ridged area as you can and mark to top two holes with a marker. It needs to be up tight with the lip on the top of the knee bolster as well (otherwise you'll run into clearance issues with the antenna cable hitting the plastic vent tube). Use a scratch awl to mark the center of the holes and then drill them out with an appropriate drill bit. I used a 3/32" drill bit and two #6 x 1/2" self-tapping metal screws.

NOTE: If desired, attach some material to the knee bolster where the HD Radio will sit. I used some thin sound deadening material to make sure there wouldn't be any rattles.

Step 6: Attach HD Radio to Knee Bolster (US Market)
I used two #6 x 1/2" self-tapping metal screws to attach mine.
NOTE: Make sure the dip switches are set the way you want! According to the instructions, they should be set properly in their default setting, but confirm since you wont have access to the switches once you mount the Radio.

Step 7: Route Cables to Attach to HD Radio
Route 6-foot DICE extension cable, Stealth antenna cable (one with matching ends seen in right side of Stealth HD Antenna pic above), iPod connection cable and 1/8" aux cable (if you desire to have these two cables come out in the Storage Partition or Center Console) down behind the plastic vent tube (which blows on the passenger's feet) and then horizontally behind the vent tube (that routes air to the rear passenger's feet) and out into the area underneath the heater controls where the Storage Partition normally resides.

Step 8: Connect Cables to HD Radio
Connect all the cables you routed in the previous step to the HD Radio. Pics to come!

Step 9: Reattach Knee Bolster (US Market)
Fit knee bolster into place and reinstall three 10mm bolts. Once back in place, you'll see very little of the HD Radio itself (see marked area in the pic below). The cables attach on the bottom side and would be accessible with the under dash panel removed (black piece that attaches underneath).

What did you do about the stealth? I installed today, no AM stations (should be... I live between Philly and NYC) and only one or two HD FM stations. The stock antenna SUCKS!
