Quote: Two M3 versions of the 3-series compact (the body style sold here as the 318ti) were built: one with the 282-hp, 3.0-liter engine, and one with the 317-hp, 3.2-liter engine. BMW studied bringing this car to market carefully, finally deciding not to. The idea now lives with the 1-series M Coupe. | __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 01-31-2015, 04:31 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: PA Posts: 1,906 | The way they were meant to be imo. I love the dual exhaust!! I wonder the reasons they decided against it. __________________ | | | 01-31-2015, 05:52 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Haha! I have a feeling that it wasn't built because it would of competed closely with the flagship m3, in terms of performance. As we all know it's quite simple to swap in an S50/S52. From what I can remember the 95 M3 had a base price around $37 with the Ti at $19. What they would charge for an M Ti is anyone's guess but too much and it wouldn't sell, too little and it would take away from M3 sales. And yes, I believe building a dream is better than buying one 😅 unless that dream is a GT3 __________________ | | | 01-31-2015, 09:42 PM | #6 | Member Join Date: Jan 2015 Location: New Hampshire, USA Posts: 73 | What are those wheels on that m3 Compact? | | | 01-31-2015, 09:47 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | Quote: Originally Posted by DerekNH What are those wheels on that m3 Compact? | Factory LTW's, originally found on the M3 LTW's __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion. Doesn't make much sense since they built an E36 M Roadster. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-01-2015, 07:46 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: Santa Rosa, CA Posts: 407 | Quote: Originally Posted by ZEK I have a feeling that it wasn't built because it would of competed closely with the flagship m3, in terms of performance. | Hmm, but it would be an M3. They already built three versions (coupe, sedan, convertible) without worrying about them competing. I bet it would have sold reasonably well in Europe considering the success of the standard Compact. In the United States, definitely not. __________________ 1997 318ti 5-speed Moreagrün 1996 318ti auto Hellrot (retired) | | | 02-01-2015, 04:43 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by Coyoteh Hmm, but it would be an M3. Better than tourings but that doesn't stop BMW AG from making them. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-02-2015, 06:13 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Globally Posts: 1,162 | The compact was designed to get younger buyers into a BMW for less money. It was not designed with a major sporting nature, hence the hodge podge suspension. Don't get me wrong I would have bought one if they had made it. At present time I am looking for a Z3/4 M coupe. Would prefer a Z4M but they are very few and far between. | | | 02-03-2015, 01:10 AM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: Santa Rosa, CA Posts: 407 | Quote: Originally Posted by M-technik-3 It was not designed with a major sporting nature, hence the hodge podge suspension. | Wasn't it because they simply couldn't fit the standard E36 suspension in the shortened rear? The Z3M's use the same design, and they have a very serious sporting nature. __________________ 1997 318ti 5-speed Moreagrün 1996 318ti auto Hellrot (retired) | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
