I can't seem to figure out where the "low port" on my air-conditioning unit is so that I can recharge my air conditioner. I think it is right in front of the reservoir for the window-washer fluid but the only picture I could find of a 3 series on the net had two ports side by side. And, these ports (the high port and the low port) seemed to be located, according to the picture, near the windshield.
My mechanic when I asked him to check it out when he was doing an inspection I, said the compressor was working fine but that I was out of freon. The flow of air is not compromised. It just blows hot air.
My ex-hsuband used to recharge our old Chev. and it didn't seem that "dangerous". There are two kits out-one for tracing leaks and the other for recharging. I just want to re-charge. I have read on various forums that after 8 years that the freon just may be all used up and all you need is a recharge. At least it would get me through the rest of this hot California summer.
Otherwise, I'm going to have to lay out $140 or more. I just put $1,200 (4 new Bridgestone Pierelli tires, and Inspection I, and new front brakes) and if I could do it for $30 myself it would sure be nice. Money is tight in the summer for sub teachers.
So for those of you who have re-charged your system with the various kits, where is the low port in the 1997 318ti and which kit worked best for you?
Thanks.
