Default Both Turbo and Supercharger?

AS the title implies, is it possible to construct an engine that is both supercharged, and tourbo charged? I cant seem to find many articles on this type of set up. Infact ive never seen one, and never heard talk of it.

I know the basics how both of these work, but not enough to know if they can both be used at the same time, or if the plumbing could be fabbed up to work on our engine.

I did read about some car manufacturer, i forget the company, in a car and driver issue lately, that has a car with a really small 4cyl, eninge but is both super and tubo charged, it gets good gas mileage is actualy fun to drive. I was wondering if thius could be done to our engine to give some extra power, and spunk to our engine.

Am I crazy, or is this possible?
THANKS,
DAN

Back when I was still in the Benz camp, Renntech was one of the tuner companies that I looked towards for upgrades for mine and my dad's car.

On their site, there was a showcase of their r170 SLK test mule, known as the SLK RS. It was originally a 2.3 supercharged engine, but renntech fitted both a supercharger and turbo that equated to over 300ish hp.

Here's the info from the PDF file years ago about the upgrade and cost:

5) 310HP @ 6200 RPM, 330 lbs-ft torque @ 3000-5400 RPM (4.7 seconds 0 to 60) 125 HP Increase, 2.3 liter, Combination of a Turbo Charger and a Supercharger, Full High Performance Exhaust, Modified Electronics, Custom Intake Manifold, Custom Piping, Ported and Polished Intake and Exhaust, Larger Intercooler and Piping, High Performance Camshaft. $22,450

6) 335HP @ 6200 RPM, 360 lbs-ft torque @ 2900-5300 RPM (4.4 seconds 0 to 60) 150 HP Increase, 2.5 liter, Combination of a Turbo Charger and a Supercharger, Full High Performance Exhaust, Modified Electronics, Custom Intake Manifold, Custom Piping, Ported and Polished Intake and Exhaust, Larger Intercooler and Piping, High Performance Camshaft. $29,950.

It wouldn't be a bad idea,it would give you two things.
1. S/C will give you the low end power.
2. Turbo would give you the power at higher speeds.

It's possible, and has been done before. I believe the car you're thinking of is the Volkswagen Golf SuperTurbo. Lancia also used it quite successfully in the 80s, with the Delta Integrale and such.

Look for MR2s. I've seen 2 turbo/super setups.

It involves extra managment to make it work, like stand-alone ECU.

You have all the support of the 318ti world if you want to experiment!

well im glad to know that it is possible. And at this point i am doing research because my engine is on its last leg, and i'd like to stay with a 4cyl engine, but i want more power out of it. But unforunately i idont know enough about either of these two set ups for me to start experimenting on my own. would anyone here have any suggestions of mechanincs or private people i could get in contact with to start making some plans or lead me in the right direction to start this odd, but exciting journey?

In my opinion, if your going to install a turbo on the car, the supercharger is very large and expencive way just to make power for the first 3000 rpm and then go into bypass for the turbo to take you the rest of the way. If you were doing a turbo setup, I would spend the extra money on turbo cams, .002 over bore forged pistons, pueter rods, and a ball bearing turbo like a gt30r. That will get you spooled up quickly and you can run serios boost like 17-20 psi.
With the rods and pistons done, you go to your head with double springs, hollow valves, titanium retainers and now you can increase your rev limit to 7,500k at least. Now you have a LOOONG power band with serios boost.

Turbo's feed the supercharger.

he means that some of the big old transport trucks did this. I think that for our cars, building a custom system would be way too much trouble. You'd be better off sticking to just a turbo or supercharger system.
