Default Thinking about selling the '02 for a Ti.

Hello everyone,
My name is Josh and this is my baby. I've recently graduated from the chiropractic college and have been thinking about a more "practical" car.
Then my friend came over with a cali top 318ti, oh boy lol.

The 2002 was bought new in California by a woman. She was actually a renown Professor at the University in Berkeley. Eventually it was sold to Joseph the owner of Munich Motorworks.

No corners have been cut on this car, and quite a bit of money has been spent.
I know I'll never get another early model with all of these hard to find ( near unobtainable) parts. It's hard to find any webasto top 2002's let alone one for sale with the rare color.

What do you 318ti-er's think? Should I keep it, or will I be happy in a Ti?
(The car i'm looking at is a 96 m tech 318ti in alpine white)

Why not both? 02s and ti's complement each other well. What the 02 lacks in practicality, the ti has. The ti lacks in utter 'rawness' compared to the 02.

I guess I just don't have the time/space for a project honestly.

Too bad you are so far away morgan...

The market for bmws seems crazy right now too. clapped out e30's selling for 3k? ...

What do you guys feel a fair selling price for the car is if it were in your garage?

Thanks again!!

Note* ( I have every piece for this car pictured or not including the original documents.)

I think that's mostly a PNW/Hipster problem. You'll still pay that much for E30's down here, but it had better be a decent car.

Well, both really.

Locally I see a couple of TI's for sale:

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/3817914361.html

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/3762454938.html

You'd hope the first would be nice for the price. The second looks like it could use some work but the price is right. I thought about buying it, but it's an auto and I really don't need it.

FYI: it wasn't ever actually called a 'cali top' by BMW. It was called an 'Open-Air Folding top' or just folding top. There was never a 'california package' offered on ti's and they aren't all that rare either... there are less ti's without an open-top or sunroof than there are with them. So the hard topped ti's are the actual rarest ti's.

btw: the replacement for the open-air top motor is like $475 and takes months to get. The gears inside are plastic and are not replaceable. I had to change my tops motor as it was hopping open instead of sliding smoothly!

Here's a brochure from BMW that specifically refers to it as a "California Roof"

Default awful news

Yipes! I am so depressed to see this - - still its not 'cali - top' but California Roof. Oh well close enough.

That was the Canadian brochure but the USA brochure is probably the same. Weird my 288 Morea Green is not an option in the link above that you posted. though it calls the Engine an M44 so that's gotta be 1996 Brochure. I am going to buy the 1997 brochure on ebay...

However, in the BMW TIS (internal service manual), the cars build sheets and realoem.com its Folding Top (sunroof is sliding top) or Open-Air Folding Top.

I guess I just dislike the term 'Cali-top' sounds stupid, like it only works in California.

I want to see if I can find the German domestic brochure..

the build sheet didn't call it that though - its option
