Today i took my car to bmw for an alignment, about 5 mins ago i get a call from them saying they cant align it because the rear driver's side wheel bearing has play in it. Ive done a search on rear wheel bearings and got no info whatsoever. How do i fix my problem? Find someone with the specialty tool and see if i can borrow it, or should i take it to a shop (last thing i want to do) and have it fixed? __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 07-18-2006, 08:55 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | If you don't absolutely know how to fix something the right answer is always to take it to somebody who does. The rear-end of the ti is very similiar to the e30. So these instructions should apply. My general feeling is that these instructions apply to just about any car that has IRS, I could be wrong though. http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech...el_bearing.htm | | | 07-18-2006, 09:06 PM | #3 | TRETEN IRGENDEINES ESELS Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Rhode Island Posts: 3,687 | There is a write up in the knowledge base on how to do the bearings. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 07-18-2006, 09:24 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Quote: Originally Posted by mohaughn If you don't absolutely know how to fix something the right answer is always to take it to somebody who does. Im at work right now, and i want to know how to approach the problem quickly and efficiently when im able to get to it. I have a Bently book at home, does it also have the info on the rear wheel bearing? __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 07-18-2006, 11:56 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | Quick note from glancing over the article: WD40 is NOT a penetrating spray. Honestly, I've lost a little faith in Pelican today . . . __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 07-19-2006, 05:38 AM | #6 | Member Join Date: Jun 2004 Location: FT LUADERDALE, FL Posts: 91 | from my understanding and what an alignment shop told me after i dropped the car you cant get the rear aligned no place to make changes __________________ Specs: M-Technic Front/Rear, M3 Side Skirts & Mirrors, MS Roof Wing, Euro Tail Lights, Projector Signals, ADR M Sport 18x8.5, H&R Sport Springs, Bilstien Sport Shocks, E46 M3 Rear Shock Mounts, M Roadster Rear Shock Mount Plates, Momo Shift Knob, Bavauto 8mm Perf Wires, K&N Cone Filter, Stainless Steel Brake Lines, Cross Drilled Rotors, 20 Piece Carbon Fiber Dash Kit, NR White Guage Face, X-Brace, BMP Strut Tower Brace, UUC stage 2 flywheel, and SS clutch line | | | 07-19-2006, 07:48 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Muncie, Indiana Posts: 1,551 | Quote: Originally Posted by 1uvaknd from my understanding and what an alignment shop told me after i dropped the car you cant get the rear aligned no place to make changes | That is correct. To align the rear of the car you have to install eccentric rear trailing arm bushings like I have in my car. Unfortunately you have to have a compromise of what you want for camber and toe. Upfront I think all you can do is adjust the toe unless camber plates are installed. | | | 07-19-2006, 01:50 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | The rear can be adjusted if you buy a camber kit. I'm gonna put my BavAuto kit in when I swap out driveshafts. Quote: Originally Posted by AlaskaBlue That is correct. The car has 192k on it, so i guess it will be worth it. Is there anything else i might as well do while im down there? The cheapest bearings i found for the car is 72$, is this a good price? __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 07-19-2006, 02:49 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | Changing the rear bearings is just painful enough that I would make darn sure I got GOOD bearings instead of cheap ones. At least make sure they are german or US made. Heck I'd probubly go OEM unless the $$ were insane.
