Tomorrow it will be in the 90s which will be a better test.

With the AC on it sometimes bogs down at idle.

I used a Harbor Freight fuel pressure gauge in-line and started it right up. I check on initial startup, then after it's run for awhile.

I have some issues in my 95 with m42 also. When I got the car..geez almost 5yrs ago, from a member on here at the time, he told me that when first starting the car you need to let it idle for 30 seconds to 1minute before driving, otherwise it will bog down badly. This was true, and still is. He tried a new O2 sensor..etc..never changed anything.
The car had a magnaflow cat when I got it, which has since plugged up as well, and is now a straight thru resonator instead. Since it is straight thru now, I realize how pig rich it is now on start up. Most likely the reason that the cats keep clogging up, I would like to solve the problem before i reinstall another cat and waste it. I do want to put the cat back in the exhaust, because I do notice a loss of low end torque, and it is raspy.
Wondering if the startup rich condition may be the coolant temp sensor on the head, Since in most cars the ecu or dme in this case takes the values from there at startup.
MPG is steadily declining, under 25 now mixed city and hwy. Im not easy on the gas though, and it is redlined in 2nd and 3rd regularly.
car does run well after that first warm-up minute, but if I try to drive before that it wil bog badly and the idle will hunt for about 30 seconds and then stabilize and I can drive.

Replaced... head gasket, water pump, radiator, coolant pipe on block, all vacuum hoses including spider to injectors, fuel filter, O2 sensor, dme, spark plugs and wires, and no cat. Never replaced the coolant temp sensor or the pcv.

Car turned over 222,000 as I pulled into my parking spot at work tonight. I really do like this car, and the m42 engine, and would like to get it right after all these years of dealing with it. Have had many opportunities to swap it out but I want to stick with it.
Hopefully maybe my experiences can answer some of your questions too.

And finally a question. . Does anyone know if the injectors from a1996 are compatible with my 1995? The 1996 being obd2 are probably a different impedance, correct? Wondering if i may have a partially clogged injector and that is the fuel dump I'm smelling. I just bought and stripped a 1996, so I have a rail with injectors from it.

Fuel is controlled by the airflow meter(AFM) from idle to partial throttle. There is a carbon track inside the AFM that wears out. When I used to have a car with an AFM, at 150k miles, the carbon tracks on the 1.5k - 3k rpm section are worn I had to move the wiper contact to a new fresh carbon track. Or you can try another AFM with low mileage on it.
1996 and up use MAF instead of AFM.

I think it might have been a bad MAF. Thanks Rich!
I have to swap out for the replacement back to the original to see if the problem comes back. I sure hope it does.

I still need to replace my knock sensors and probably need to replace my exhaust.

Update, pretty sure that the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm on my 95 is bad. Pulled the vacuum line and get a strong fuel odor. Had the same issue on an 89 vette I was working on for a friend one time.

Looks like about $50 for a new one, and hopefully I'll get back the 50-60 miles per tank that I have been missing. And get rid of the overpowering fuel stench right after startup.

After installed Rich's MAF the car felt better.
I swapped the original back in to confirm.
After 3 or 4 days acceleration is poor early in the morning.
It almost feels like the car is progressively getting worse which I am hoping for.
I'm going to give it a few more days to convince myself that the car is not running right then reinstall the replacement MAF.

When I drive along a wall the car sounds like a jack hammer.

These is weird. The car has been fine.
I leave it parked on an incline for several days and my idle is acting up again.
This is what happened once before.

I'm not even sure what I did the last time.
New vacuum hoses. Swapped the MAF. Gas filter. 02 sensor.

I know there is a knock sensor issue that I need to resolve.

I'm told it could be the FPR.
No fuel is coming out of the FPR when I remove the vacuum hose.
Of course the idle changes.

After driving for about 20 minutes the car just dies as soon as I take my foot of the gas.

More..
Bentley Manual shows the vacuum hose existing the FPR from the side.
My car it's from the top.
The manual says to note the position.
Which position is correct?
