Default Coolant

What coolant do you guys recommend for our car? Will anything do or is it best to use the BMW stuff?

From my understanding of coolant....as long as there is antifreeze....(a biocide to kill stuff) its should be fine...

Do not mix coolants! If you mix they will react and cause big problems. I use the BMW recommended coolant in mine.

Not going to mix, plan on completely draining both radiator and engine block.....

Will anything do then?

If you use the same type of coolant that was already in there it will be fine.

No clue what was originally in there....

I have a long trip to make this weekend and the level is just at the bottom of the expansion tank.....I can barely see it if i open the cap and peer in with a flash light. I was planning on just adding some distilled water to make the trip, then just flushing the whole system when I got back.

I believe that the color of the coolant is enough to "know" what was in there. I *think* you would be fine flushing with the same color, however, read through the pelican article. He makes some good points why to use BMW coolant.

Sooo, is there a website or place where you can buy the proper coolant besides paying SuperRetail at the dealer?

I use the BMW stuff, just to be safe. It is stupidly expensive though. Apparently Zerex G-05 is good alternative.

Tanks.
Always wondered about that, I have done several timing belt/waterpump/idler pulley replacements on E30's with no repercussions yet.... I always just used prestone or other expensive name brands.

(Don't spank me now, the jug always said compatible with all engines, LOL)

My bad...

I have always used Prestone 50/50 in my cars. I just match the colors if it's green than it's green. But it is important to have a 50/50 mix and not just 100% antifreeze.

i have a question i had the green bmw coolant then when it started leaking i got the cheap peak 50/50 also green and just filled up a small amount im wondering if after i replace my radiator i can just fill it up with bmw coolant and not do a flush because i really dont have time i just want to know if it would cause horrible damage... and do i need to worry about air bubbles?
