Default Broken motor mounts caused engine to shift

Hey all,

(bold/italicized is the important stuff)

During my last rallyx event (October), I hit dropped down into a deep rut which caused my mounts to blow and an exhaust leak. I'm finally getting around the replacing them now that it's warm using the DIY on here (using a jack) however when I removed the driver side mount, I realized that both sides were in two parts and the engine had shifted to the driver side by about 1/2 an inch.

I removed the passenger side hoping this would allow the engine to move back over. It didn't. Rented an engine hoist this morning however when I pull the engine to the passenger side, it moves right back to where it was, off center.

I could recruit my roommate to lower the engine while I pull it into position however this doesn't solve the root problem - why won't the engine stay in the correct position when moved? If I lower it onto the mounts, will the pressure from the engine trying to pull itself toward the driver side cause the trans/engine mounts to fail prematurely? Do I need to disconnect the transmission as well?

Disconnect the transmission mounts as well. You should not have to disconnect the transmission to change the motor mounts. By removing the transmission mounts it should give you enough play to maneuver the engine to get the mounts to line up correctly. You may need to get a second set of hands to help as well. You may also find the transmission mounts may have broken as well.

Thanks Joe. I loosened up the trans mounts and crossmember and with the help of my roommate, was able to get the engine positioned.

Steps I took:
  1. Loosen the crossmember bolts and lower trans mounts nuts to allow more movement
  2. Driver side mount (bottom nut snug) - Person 1 pulls the hoist/engine over while person 2 checks if the stud lines up
  3. Person 2 slowly lowers the hoist while person 1 continues to hold it in position
  4. Put top nut on driver side mount just enough that it won't come off, jack hoist back up until passenger side mount will fit into place
  5. Person 1 holds mount into place (lined up correctly) while person 2 lowers the hoist
  6. Torque both sides to 33 ft/lbs and replace / tighten trans mounts and crossmember

Sounds great! That is pretty much how I go about changing the motor mounts. I am hoping to put my solid mounts in my track car next week and will probably have to get my wife to help me line up the mounts!
