The skin on his rear bumper is scuffed. On my car all the mounts on the engine and trans broke, everything shifted forward 3-4 inches, the driveshaft slipped out and stripped the splines. The parts are about $1000. Anything like this happen to anybody?? | | | 09-16-2010, 09:08 AM | #2 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Sounds like your motor mounts may have already been worn out and the impact from the accident was enough to tear them completely allowing the engine to shift forward and pull the tranny with it. Sucks. | | | 09-16-2010, 01:13 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | wow, neat and horrible at the same time. Makes me want to replace my mounts now. __________________ No more ti. | | | 09-16-2010, 06:16 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: San Diego Posts: 231 | Yeah Jess that's what I'm guessing. Sounds like a freak thing. It has just under 200,000 miles and the mounts were probably original. Plus I drive the piss out of it | | | 09-16-2010, 06:29 PM | #5 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | FWIW, when I bought my M3 donor the passenger side motor mount was completely sheared in half, the driver's side was ripped, the engine was resting on the steering rack and the tranny crossmember was snapped. The oil pan had a couple hairline cracks from sitting on the steering rack(probably didn't help that I ran the engine for about a half an hour before I bought the car). Not bad considering the car jumped a curb and smacked into a wall. | | | 09-16-2010, 06:36 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: LA, Bellflower, CA Posts: 3,613 | moral of the story.... replace your engine and tranny mounts if your car is old, worn, or driven the hell out of. __________________ -Theta Chi- Float like a cadilac, sting like a BIMMER .... my socket is just too thick and won't fit in the hole! damnit! The 4 cyl isn't as smooth as the 6 cyl so you could get some nasty vibrations by using 6 cyl poly mounts. Vorshlag made mounts specifically for the 4 cyl for this reason. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 09-16-2010, 09:30 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | +1 on the vorshlagg stuff. The UUC motormounts are not a bolt through design and just have these little metal plates sunk into urethane. They rip and fail pretty easily. The vorshlagg motor mounts of very nice, complete bolt through design, and the urethane can be replaced without needing completely new mounts. I run the UUC red transmissions mounts, the bolt through ones, and mine are starting to crack. Only took them about 3 years to crack. Putting re-inforcement cups around them and seeing if I can run them a little longer. Just have to keep an eye on them in case the cracking gets any worse. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
