I was wondering lately if i can find a way to fix the problem with my odometer. My car I got 3 years ago with 130,000mi today it has 146,000mi. 2 winters ago, due to cold weather (i think) my odometer randomly showed pretty faded digits or it showed just the upper part of the digits. That was happening in the mornings in the cold that is why i assume it is from the cold. Suddenly, one day it was already showing weird symbols that could not be read starting with first digit 2(2xxxxx)...that was readable plus maybe few others.it showed something like 2x9xxx, which can be 289xxx or 209xxx or any other. This is how everyting is today too, the only difference is that i put almost 20,000mi since then. Apparently, the odometer counts millage, but I never paid much attention because i knew it is wrong. My trip meter works fine and it was my guide to when to change my oil. Just recently it went over showing 210xxx. I don't think that is correct millage but few questions came on my mind. 1/ Is it possible that I bought the car with manually tweaked down or "fixed" odometer from the dealer (used car dealer)? Personally, I don't think that is the case but I can't be 100% sure. 2/ I went to the bwm dearership and they straight told me they don't know (or won't) how to deal with that problem. There is nobody else to ask except for here at the 318ti.org. 3/ I was wondering if a new(used) odometer cluster is installed, would it read correct millage. Any suggestions would be greately appreciated. __________________ all stock '95 318ti m42 auto 150,000mi Last edited by gneus; 10-05-2009 at 03:09 PM. | | | 07-18-2008, 07:52 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | If the mileage on the odometer (cluster) and ECU (computer) don't match, there is a small clock symbol above the digits. It's called a manipulation dot, and it looks like a dot until you get really close. There is a way to correct the mileage on a cluster but it must be done at the dealer since it uses their computer. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 07-18-2008, 02:26 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Eugene Oregon Posts: 6,182 | chris with the club sport (clex2) got his odometer matched to his cars mileage when he put in the s50. he said a shop in cali can do it and he payed around 200 but wasnt sure exactly the price. but it is do able __________________ -Josh Sold-1995 318ti, Club Sport, Hellrot Sold-1996 318ti, Active Model, Boston Green Current- 1995 318ti, sport model, schwartz | | | 07-18-2008, 03:10 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 1,224 | there is a special test mode of the e36 clusters where the cluster will adopt the greater of the mileage that it has stored or the DME. Read this for how to do it: http://www.bmw-m.net/techproc/test.htm BTW, I've got a 318ti cluster available with 143k miles on it. Let me know if you want it. Mine has chrome gauge rings so a bit of an improvement over stock. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Thread Tools | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
