Default Mystery Noise from Diff

I've got a mystery noise coming from my diff. Sounds like a scrapping shhhhhh noise coming from the rear. I've had 2 mechanics look at it - one recommended replacing the diff which we have done with a decent second hander. BUT the noise is still there. It's got us baffled. Another mechanic has looked at it and reckons it's coming right from where the diff head connects with the drive shaft. Any ideas what this could be? One guy even suggested its a common fault with the 318, a factory fault and that there was nothing I could do about it!! Surely not?

Check to make sure the ABS sensors are adjusted correctly. They may be scraping on the halfshafts and require a washer as a shim. They are on the wheel yoke, next to where the brake fluid line goes into.
