I bent a control arm last spring, which replacement for that, and the other side ball joint, and the bushings (did some extra work while they were in there) was much more expensive than a set of snow tires. You can get steel wheels if you don't want to deal with having them mounted/unmounted each year. If you only want one set of wheels, get some good all season tires like Goodyear Assurance Triple treads or something, which rate relatively well for all driving conditions including snow. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....nce+TripleTred Don't even attempt to drive when it is icy with summer tires. You just put yourself and others in danger. That is what happened to me, I got stuck out with my Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's that are pretty much non-functional this time of year. You will also find that the summer compounds used don't work well when the temperature is cold, even on dry pavement. When the temperature is regularly below 40 degrees and there is a chance of snow, that is the time to put on the all seasons or snow tires. They sell snow tires now that have great dry performance and good snow performance too. Much better than any all season on snow, but still almost as good as the all seasons on cold dry pavement. So you don't have to totally give up the sporty driving. | | | 01-16-2007, 02:05 PM | #17 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | jack up one side and remove both front and rear swap them over, if it still looks so bad then get some new wheels with tyres on have a god look at your shock as it may be bent, also the trailing arm as it may be out of wack. looks like its going to be a drive to your specialist, and a fairly large bill. __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free ! Maybe youll get lucky and get off with just a bent rim. If you have a second set of rims, put them on and take it to get an alignment, if not, swap the fronts to the rear and vise versa and see if the dealership will give you the specs on the rear. That should let you know if you bent the trailing arm or if its just a bent rim. When i went to the dealership to see what actually got bent, they said they couldnt tell me if it was just the trailing arm or if the frame got bent as well, and recommended that the trailing arm, half shaft, and rim be replaced because they can tell whether the frame was damaged. Brand new the trailing arm is about 700-800 bucks, 250 for the halfshaft and misc. bits n pieces, and however much your rim would cost. I labor is 3-3.5 hours. These are dealer prices in toledo, ohio...i can get the exact prices when i get home if youd like. If you have to replace the trailing arm and you take the junkyard route, you can get one for about 100-300. Good luck with your problem, hope its nothing serious. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 01-16-2007, 10:53 PM | #20 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | With the snow tires definitly go for some Blizzak Revo 2s! I just had some fun on a couple of streets that havnt been cleared yet and I had so much control. It was a night and day difference compared to my old all seasons. __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 01-17-2007, 12:25 AM | #21 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Ft Lauderdale, Fl moving to Eastern PA in May of 2007 Posts: 326 | I think you are in good shape, the control arm would bend or the tie rod would break before anything serious would be damaged. __________________ 318ti, sport, hellrot, 05/95 Munich, Germany | | | 01-17-2007, 12:32 AM | #22 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Ft Lauderdale, Fl moving to Eastern PA in May of 2007 Posts: 326 | Wow, I thought the pictures were the front tire. Hopefully its just a rim, but odds are that you may have bent the arm too. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 01-17-2007, 07:05 AM | #24 | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Michigan Posts: 46 | that sucks...anyone no where i can get a control arm? The labor for that job isn't cheap either. Let’s hope the rim absorbed the entire blow On the bright side it might be a good opportunity to do some other upgrades in the rear since it will be apart. __________________ 318ti, sport, hellrot, 05/95 Munich, Germany | | | 01-17-2007, 01:49 PM | #26 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: Northern Michigan Posts: 867 | Quote: Originally Posted by 318racer that sucks...anyone no where i can get a control arm? They all claim to have a right rear trailing arm[/U] for the 318ti. #1 Go Go Auto Parts. Delton, MI http://www.gogoautoparts.com/ $55 #2 Auto Sport Unlimited. Zeeland, MI http://www.autosportsunlimited.com/ $120 Hopefully it's just a (semi) trailing arm that's bent. If you hit hard enough it's possible that you wrecked a mounting tab on the subframe. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
