Unhappy Rear ended. :(

So yesterday morning I took my car in to the shop to have a spacer put on the idler pulley. Car got done and I was running some other errands. Traffic was backed up because of some utility work in one lane, I was completely stopped, brakes pushed and a guy rear ends me (I'm thinking 20-25mph or so). Looks like mostly cosmetic damage to my car, but I should find out more today when my mechanic puts it on the lift. The rear axle didn't look out of place at all and I was able to drive it to my mechanics place without issue. The other guys car, well the pictures say it all.

I know he got at least one ticket, not sure for what though. When the police officer was taking our info, the insurance card he gave the officer had been expired for two years. He claims his insurance is current, I'll find out today when I give them a ring. The unfortunate thing is due to circumstances I'm unable to get a rental car, even though his insurance company should owe me one. Luckily nobody was hurt, though I've heard neck pain and such can sometimes show up a few days later.

If any positive can be found, it's that I got a second chance to see the Lamborghini LM002 at my mechanics shop (and take some better pics of it).

I should mention, my plans are to keep the car and have it fixed, even if his insurance (assuming it's valid) wants to total it. And Sean already has dibs on the rear bumper and insert.

Keep it! That car has memories and road trips under it's belt.
Also, if you go another direction...I'll gladly buy your interior!

As long as my mechanic says it's safe to drive, I will be keeping the car even if they total it out. If it's going to take money to make it drivable, then I've got decisions to make. I've got about $1800 saved up right now for a trip to Scotland in the spring, but if I have to dip into that too much it will mean not going to Scotland, and I really, really, really don't want to do that.

If I have to get a "new" car, I want to stick with a ti, but that all depends on price and availability (already looked at some of the FS ads here). If I couldn't, I'd try to stick with an E36, but cost and condition will play a big part of that. Right now it's playing the waiting game with the insurance company and my mechanic.

Dammit, sorry to hear this, good that you're OK. Figure out what you need I have a few spare parts, if they match what you need, you can have it for shipping cost.

Justin;

Sorry the car got hit, but glad to hear that you are ok. Things are replaceable, people are not.

Break open your favorite scotch tonight and toast to your continued good health.

Like Rich says, let us know if you need anything.

Mini update. Talked with the shop yesterday. Sounds like the adjuster is willing to work with them so they don't have to total the car. He said they were going to try to get a used bumper to save on costs. I laughed and told him good luck, but if it keeps them from having to total the car, I'm fine with it. Sounds like there isn't any mechanical damage. Hoping to officially hear back from the other insurance company today. Oh, and I did tell them to save parts.

So his insurance company wrote me a check to pay for the repairs based on the estimate ($1,657.71). If the shop finds other hidden damage or that doesn't cover the costs, they will send out a supplemental check to the shop. I'm guessing that will probably be the case, as the estimate doesn't have the bumper energy absorber or spare tire carrier listed (unless the spare carrier is part of the "rear body panel" or "rear floor pan" repair), and the bumper listed is the wrong one (51-12-8-146-458; base model bumper for vehicles before 9/1996 according to RealOEM).

I think the shop is going to source the parts. I have to ask if anyone has the plastic handle that's used to pull the spare tire carrier up, either a spare one or one they no longer need. Mine broke quite a long time ago and it makes lifting the carrier up a bitch. It's part # 51-71-8-165-737 and is a special order item on the various online shops.

I have one of these plastic handles, Justin! If you could cover the shipping costs I can send it out to you tomorrow!
