Default Emblem on hatch

Does anybody know how to replace the emblem on the hatch?

I've got a fine condition 1998 318ti, which some dickless m-f'er ripped the sticker portion off of my emblem. Now I need to figure out how to remove the old one and install the new one.

if you got a new one - just pry off the old one.

it is held on by 2 prongs (just like the hood one)... or you may take off the inside trunk trim & do it properly if you need to save it.

So the prongs don't need to be unattached from inside the hatch, beneath the trim?

I can just break the old one off, then push the prongs of the new one right into the 2 holes?

I don't want to damage the body by tearing the old piece off.

just be careful by trying to pry it off. I did it with the hood emblem and the two prongs broke and stayed inside the holes.

Use a putty knife and a credit card to protect the paint. A bit of masking tape on the paint won't hurt either...

if that happens you can use a slim screwdriver to just poke them into the holes, no big really.

Use a advertising fridge magnet, and wedge it in between the roundel and the car. It's best if you use 2 (1 on each side). Then pry it evenly with 2 flat heads. You shouldn't really have a problem with the grommets.

It's not as hard as people make it out to be. I've replaced quite a few of them on many bimmers.

make sure you buy the grommets, there's a 50/50 chance that you will or won't need new ones, but they're cheap enough that you may as well just buy them anyway

.. hmm..

.... i used a drill.. drilled into the center of the BMW logo.. then used a screwdriver to pop off the emblem ... haha.. but i think if you try the credit card and screw driver first, you should be able to get it..

(im not joking btw.. haha.. it came off alot easier, and no need to worrie about scratching visible paint.

I highly doubt that's a good idea
You might not scratch the visible paint, but if you actually get to the car and get it past the paint, you could risk rusting behind the emblem.

Just out of curiosity, how bad does your roundel have to get before you replace it?

My roundel on the front looks great, I replaced it last year. The one on the hatch is original though and it's starting to peel and bubble in some places. It's not very bad yet though and I'm resisting the urge to drop $20 on a new one.

How much are you guys willing to put up with?

I wouldn't worry to much about it. If funds are plentiful, then go ahead. I got the black and white carbon fiber. It really looks nice.

eh, I didn't replace my front one until piece of it popped off, the back one has some minor cracks in it but not enough for me to worry

I'm on my second front one, and due for another.

Last I checked, the rear one was perfect...
