I am having problems with my 1998 318ti with automatic transmission. Just last week, my car would not crank. At first, I thought it would be the starter but I could jump the starter and it would crank. So after reading all the information that i can I think I have narrowed it down to the ews2 module. I have tested all the fuses and they are good but I am not getting power through the fuel pump fuses at all. I have tried to bypass the ews2 starter kill by connecting wire 1 and 3 and now it cranks but still wont start. So I have also tried spraying starting fluid into the intake while cranking and still it wont start. This leads me to believe that I am not getting spark. I think the ews2 module is diabling my starter, fuel, and ignition. Since my vehicle is obd2 I cant do a full ews bypass without flashing the DME. Is there any other way to check the individual components like the antenna ring, key transponder, receiver/transmitter with a code reader. Any input is welcomed. | | | 01-14-2015, 09:25 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2014 Location: Hawaii Posts: 114 | Here are some information about the EWS. Please the attachment. How's the plugs? Did you check if you getting sparks? If no, check the relay inside the DME compartment. | | | 01-15-2015, 01:09 AM | #4 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2015 Location: san jose, ca Posts: 12 | thanks for the input. I will take a look at it tonight. Another question is would a bad cps sensor cause a no crank condition? | | | 01-15-2015, 01:35 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2014 Location: Hawaii Posts: 114 | When you turn the ignition switch to run (start position), nothing happen like clicking? Las week I bought this project car and the owner sold to me cheap because the reason of no crank. If I turn the ignition to start, there's no action at the starter, I suspected that the DME, EWS and Key transponder is not communicating with each other. So, I replaced all these items at once and finally the car start. In your case, you bypass the EWS and now the car crank but it doesn't go thru to run. If the car crank now, there are three things the car need to run 1. fuel with pressure 2. electric at the plugs 3. cylinder compression. Try to look for these three factors. If you have these factors, then timing is next that will be affected by the crankshaft position sensor and cam position sensor. If the battery, it will cost at least $20.00. Google it how replace the battery and the type (kind) of battery. | | | 01-26-2015, 01:22 AM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2015 Location: san jose, ca Posts: 12 | My old keys battery was only used for the little led light inside. | | | 01-26-2015, 01:32 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2014 Location: Hawaii Posts: 114 | Ok I got it, your car is 1998, that's only the chips inside and that's the spare key. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
