Default Handbrake

How far can you drive with the handbrake on before the rear wheels fall off?
I've tried it for about 10ks

You will wear out the inner section of the rear rotors used for the parking brake and the parking brake shoes but the rear rotors and brake pads will not be affected. The parking brakes use a drum brake but the drum is the inner section of the rear rotor. If you want your parking brakes back you will have to replace the rear rotor and parking brake pads. Were the brakes smoking when you realized it? Were the parking brakes fully engaged or just partially? Do they hold the car on a slight incline? If they just barely hold the car on an incline they might be OK for parking on flat roads but might not work in an emergency. If you don't want to get it fixed and you have a manual, leave the car in reverse or 1st gear when you park, and on hills turn your wheels so the car will turn in to the curb if it rolls. Most people with manuals leave it in gear when they park anyway, it is good to use the parking brake though, if it isn't ever used I have heard on other brands of cars the cable can seize up.

Yea it almost sounded as if it was like he did it on purpose? Like "How far can you go?" I went for "10ks!" Beat that

i hope that k is a typo, or you forgot the m between the k and the s. i digress.

leaving the parking brake on, you've probably built up quite a bit of heat. your rear rotors may be warped, or your wheel bearings could have dried out. if you've got a jiggle when you brake, take it to a mechanic.

most likely (depending on how far the lever was actuated), the shoes wore down to create minimal friction after a few thousand miles.

i would have it looked at either way, actually.

How far? That was a rhetorical question by way of introduction. But yes thanks for the considered advice and challenging abreviated questions.

mickd is right. In the modern world k= kilometre, m= metre
Anyway one rear hub got very hot. I had only had the car for a couple of days, and the 318ti drives as well with the handbrake on as the Nissan Pulsar did with the handbrake off. If there is anyone out there who has not left their handbrake on inadvertantly, let me know.

in the modern world, K means both.

i'll admit, i've done this before, but only a few hundred feet. i let a friend borrow my car, who used the parking brake when finished (something i don't really do on flat surfaces). when i went to drive it, i noticed a power drain and how much i had to slip the clutch to get it going.

"doesn't say a lot about me, but it doesn't say much about the brakes either."
