Default DIY M3 Side View Mirrors

*VERY IMPORTANT*
The 318ti shares the same mirrors as the e36 sedan/4dr
COUPE MIRRORS WILL NOT FIT!!!
Picked up a set of M3 mirrors on ebay for $125 shipped. These are replicas, but the quality is so good that they might as well be OEM. They shipped from Taiwan and arrived in just 4 days! I'm very happy with the results:

The new mirrors are noticeably quieter while driving and compliment the rest of my Mtechnic bodykit.

Thanks guys, glad you liked it. I know it's a pretty easy procedure, but maybe it will help someone out. I forgot to mention that when you remove the mirrors for the first time, there's some sound deadening foam packed behind the interior trim panel. It's similar to the junk they put in our intake airboxes and mine was deteriorated pretty badly. You may want to have a small vacume handy, I just wiped mine clean over the trash can.

How would one remove the glass and motor for painting? I have a white Ti and suspect I would not be able to get proper coverage inside the lip.

Great write up!

Default E36 Sport Mirrors from Ebay.

[QUOTE=96cali;157988]How would one remove the glass and motor for painting? I have a white Ti and suspect I would not be able to get proper coverage inside the lip.

I purchased a pair of these mirrors a while back, had them painted, and installed this past weekend. During this process, I exchanged emails with the seller about glass removal and replacement. What I learned is that the glass is not internally fitted like the BMW sport mirrors. In short, the glass is not removable; I suspect its cemented in but could never get a full explanation. Yet, replacement glass is available for USD 20.00. Perhaps the first of us to have glass breakage can let the rest know how it attaches.
Further, the only real problem I saw was the quality and fit of the gasket. It is definitely thinner than the OEM and did not fit the top of the triangle nearly as well as the original. Fearing a leak point, I re-used the OEM gaskets instead and, thereafter, was very pleased with the install.

The wide angle is alright. Objects really are closer than they appear. I usually make it a habit to look over my shoulder anyway. Honestly, I really don't think it's much wider than a regular mirror.
