I'd say it's normal and at this point in the game, I'd leave it alone unless it really starts giving you problems. Even then, automatic gearboxes could be picked up for dirt cheap these days, if you wanted to go that route. Personally, I'd drive it until it blows up, then do a manual conversion. I know somebody in SoCal that has everything you need to do the swap

HaHaHa, this is an old thread. I remember being a dick to minicoop and I kinda feel bad about it now. No hard feelings bud, you've proven yourself to be really knowledgeable. Late apology I know, but rock on dude, you're okay in my book

Cooljess keeping his karma kleen.

8thcivic, does the car shift normally after a couple miles of warming up?

My car smooths out by the end of my street which is about 100 yards.

To be honest, I'm not really sure this has anything to do with the tranny - it might just be the computer adjusting everything for cold engine.

i was talking about this problem (late /delayed shifting) the otherday with out Engine and trans department, and they hinted towards this delay being a result of a low oil level in the tourque converter.

apparently the converter can hold up to 9 liters of oil , but a drop of under even ½ a liter is enough to cause this to happen..

its a thought.

If you press M it lets you shift your transmission manually.

Which will probably solve all your problems!

well its a tranny problem. confirmed. its slipping. i was entering 101N and it was going downhill. as i was accelerating, suddenly, the rpm went nuts. went to 5k then 3k up to 4. i think it was slipping on gear selection. also its not smooth shifting and it sounds like im going into reverse when im going forward. funny. can anyone recomend a tranny shop where to have it fixed? or where to get the tranny dirt cheap as one member said. any from socal? (southern California)

I only have the first gear problem.
When shifting into first it does not engage the gear untill i rev it up a little or blip the throttle then it catches. I can imagine it's because the transmission fluid is low but when reving up it pushed more fluid through the TQ converter. So I just probably need a fluid change. Only happens in first gear but once driving all the other gears are tits.

1997 318 ti Auto 148K miles

Just had trans fluid changed
Bought parts here http://germancarpartswholesale.com
filter and gaskets
Went to a trans shop I have used
They did it while I waited
I brought 5 qts napa dextron 4 and 1 qt of lucas trans treatment
I had no problems before, but now it shifts so nicely I cannot believe it
MAgnet had some metal fuzz on it, not much
The specialized tool they used was an engine oil pump attached to a drill, they use it all the time to pump trans fluid into trans
Cost me $80 over an above the kit and fluid
I am very happy

Get fluid changed with good quality, I used Napa brand
I use the lucas trans treatment with it, I was able to get 20 K more out of a car with worse problems than yours

At worst case you will have topped up fluid level to full and that alone could solve slipping problems

I changed my automatic's fluid and filter at 100k, right after I bought the car. It's messy work since there is no drain hole, but otherwise not too difficult. You can't do it lying on your back...putting the car on a lift is a must. BMW's lifetime fill concept was just corporate marketing deception...there is no transmission fluid that will remain viable for the lifetime of a car.
