Its almost a like a combo of a squeel and a click... its rather annoying, and starting to worry me as it seems to be coming from the head... or maybe from the valves... i'd greatly appreciate input guys | | | 02-08-2010, 06:10 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Minneapolis, MN Posts: 307 | Quote: Originally Posted by wolfnacht After coming back from Lancaster, I noticed the engine seemed louder than normal, and not louder at intake or exhaust... You might get lucky with a diagnoses but you might not. See about getting to a reputable shop for a inspection. you could also invest in a mechanics stethoscope if you feel the noise is coming from inside the motor. The sound could be the following. Sticky lifters, bad timing chain tensioner, throwout bearing *if noise goes away or gets worse when engaging clutch - it's a thing to check. Bad belt tension, and belt squeals, ripped belt and a piece is flapping on whatever it can while it goes around your pulley's. Bad air pump, main bearing spun, rod bearing spun, bad vanos, bent valve(s). I hope it's something silly and cheap to fix!! But those are the things that could make the noises you described. | | | 02-09-2010, 03:38 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | Quote: Originally Posted by hatchgrafix bad vanos | the M42 and M44 engines didn't have VANOS, that's one problem ruled out | | | 02-09-2010, 06:09 AM | #4 | Member Join Date: Dec 2009 Location: State Collage, PA Posts: 58 | I got to looking at the AC belt and its was chewed up abit... another thing I didn't really mention is that I was breaking trail in the snow... and belts were squeeking abit... but something tells me its NOT the belts... and there was an Instance where I missed 5th and caught 3rd and burried past the redline but I caught it as soon as I realized it was over (I watch tach when I shift) and I have cracked the rev-limiter a few times trying to push through but I wouldn't think it would do much damage... considering I was always hitting rev limiter in the neon with a blown headgasket and engine remained fine again considering 200k miles all orig parts (unintentional) and funds are currently extremely limited considering I drove 3 hrs to get me a nice bumper cover and 7 hours back | | | 02-09-2010, 08:36 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Minneapolis, MN Posts: 307 | Good call - on the no vanos. *he could have a swap right? lol They call that a money shift - you could have floated the valves and when that happens the valves make violent contact with the piston - typically bending them, or breaking them. Which makes me worried for ya! I shifted from 4th to 3rd at 105 mph - the m42 didn't like that - never ran good after that night - now I know why people don't like the "ebay" short shift kits - they suck! Try a compression test? | | | 02-09-2010, 07:12 PM | #6 | Member Join Date: Dec 2009 Location: State Collage, PA Posts: 58 | No swap... lol still stock M42 engine i believe... and I know I wasn't going Nearly as fast as you when I missed 5th and caught 3rd... eh maybe around 80-95mph but still burried the rev-limiter. and again I don't know if its from cracking the rev-limiter too many times pushing through the snow... but I know for a fact I personally didn't notice the noise till after i got back from lancaster I know this is gonna sound weird... but... I have better preformance out of the motor... since this noise started but loss in mileage... Taking car to friends place to take a good overlook will post up any details to assist Again I greatly appreciate all the help | | | 02-09-2010, 10:15 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | do you redline it very often? since you've been doing it in two different cars I'm going to say that you need to be more careful when you shift, no more super fast, F&F-style shifting. I used to shift like that too and I kept hitting the wrong gears pretty frequently until I slowed it down a little | | | 02-09-2010, 10:19 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: San Diego Posts: 340 | Mechanic's stethoscope? Im not nearly as crazy with the Bimmer as i was with my neons... I avoided redlining in the Bimmer... Neons I didn't give a****.... their Dodges... you can beat them to the end and they'll cling onto what ever they have left... and I knew just about everything to reconstruct from the ground up... between friends and FSMs and I HAVE RESOLVED THE ISSUE!! It was one of the most basic things... the A/C Idler pully froze up on my way back from pushing through snow so naturally... pully froze... belt slid across and crated flatspots... so Nothing major THANK GOD lol... But I appreciate all the help and support... | | | 02-11-2010, 03:12 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Minneapolis, MN Posts: 307 | Quote: Originally Posted by wolfnacht Rofl...
