Not much you can do with the rear unless you do some serious swapping. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 1991 BMW 325iC • 2003 MINI Cooper S www.bmwcca.org | | | 03-13-2010, 07:05 PM | #3 | | Member Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Reading, PA Posts: 42 | something better then stock, i suppose. i was going to upgrade to vented fronts but then i came upon these from a member and thought i would see if there were aftermarket calipers that perform better then stock | | | 03-13-2010, 07:21 PM | #4 | | Administrator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 6,827 | Quote: Originally Posted by cloud9193 something better then stock, i suppose. i was going to upgrade to vented fronts but then i came upon these from a member and thought i would see if there were aftermarket calipers that perform better then stock | I really need to ask, what make you think aftermarket are better? Vented rotors are more than adequate slowing me down from 110 to make a turn at the track. I really think stopping performance primarily comes from tires and brake pads. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 1991 BMW 325iC • 2003 MINI Cooper S www.bmwcca.org | | | 03-13-2010, 07:38 PM | #5 | | Member Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Reading, PA Posts: 42 | because i'm 16 and haven't had this car for a while. also, i dont really have alot of money and i got these fronts for free, so do you think i should just get new oem calipers with good pads? any recommendations? | | | 03-13-2010, 07:44 PM | #6 | | Administrator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 6,827 | Quote: Originally Posted by cloud9193 because i'm 16 and haven't had this car for a while. also, i dont really have alot of money and i got these fronts for free, so do you think i should just get new oem calipers with good pads? any recommendations? | What calipers are you getting for free? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 1991 BMW 325iC • 2003 MINI Cooper S www.bmwcca.org | | | 03-13-2010, 07:46 PM | #7 | | Member Join Date: Feb 2010 Location: Reading, PA Posts: 42 | no calipers, just front rotors, solids | | | 03-13-2010, 07:51 PM | #8 | | Administrator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 6,827 | Quote: Originally Posted by cloud9193 no calipers, just front rotors, solids | Unless the rotors are new, I don't know if I would use them. Mixing different brake pad compounds could cause deposits on your rotors. Aftermarket calipers may require different brackets and rotors. For pads, I liked Ultimate Axxis for the street. Minimal dust and stopped well. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 1991 BMW 325iC • 2003 MINI Cooper S www.bmwcca.org | | | 03-13-2010, 09:17 PM | #9 | | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 5,213 | Hey Mitch, yeah unfortunately I don't know of any aftermarket calipers that will fit our stock rotors. The main reason being that our rotors are solid instead of vented. Most aftermarket companies make big brake kits for our cars, but all of them involve upgrading rotors as well. The best bang for your buck though as mentioned before would be good pads and tires. You'll also notice a big difference if you flush and fill with new brake fluid. Another relatively inexpensive upgrade would be installing steel braided brake lines. However if you do upgrade brake hoses, there's a very good chance that you'll strip out the fittings on the hard lines, so have someone who knows what they're doing available. And finally, I'm sure you've already stumbled across it here on the forum, but you can always upgrade your front brakes to 325/328 vented rotors/calipers/carriers or M3 rotors/calipers/carriers/spindles. They're still a single piston design and since they're OEM parts, pads are always available and relatively inexpensive. There's not much you can do to the rears unless you want to have custom brackets fabricated or purchase a big brake kit, but I've never seen a BBK offered for the Ti's rear and you definitely don't want to upgrade the rear unless your front has already been upgraded. The big thing to consider when upgrading to multi-piston brakes is your car's brake bias. Anyway, since you already scored on a set of stock rotors, just go from there. New pads, fluid and perhaps some SS brake lines. Best of luck to ya. I got them with my car, needed vented, not solid. Calipers are not that hard to rebuild? Probably your cheapest option and stay with the stock setup, next time around maybe go with the vented setup? | | | 03-14-2010, 05:22 AM | #11 | | Schnell und Wütend Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: Georgia, Vermont Posts: 8,510 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 but I've never seen a BBK offered for the Ti's rear | Massive Brakes has a set, it's $1500 though so I doubt you'd be able to afford them, plus they'd screw up your brake bias really badly __________________ -Brendan BMWCCA #405199 SCCV #318 Myspace '95 Cordobarot 318ti Active AKA Tina Extreme Dimensions Bomber-style front bumper and sideskirts, 18" AT Italia Inox rims, Carbon 8 cf hood, H&R race springs, Bilstein sport shocks, BWSport RSMs, LTW M-tech moldings, Dinan intake, Momo "Race" shift knob, AC Schnitzer e-brake handle, AC Schnitzer pedals, Kamei eyelids, interior Streetglow, JVC CD/iPod hu, 2 12" RE Audio subwoofers, Kenwood amp, DIY blackout grill, Vitesse Tuning CF B-pillars, Bimmian stubby antenna, smoked clear corners and sidemarkers, Depo LED taillights, 5% limo-tint, CF roundels and debadged318ti.org decal '04 Silbergrau 325xi Premium Sport AKA Trixie DIY blackout grills '84 Bronzitbeige 318i AKA Ilsa Bavauto springs, AC Schnitzer shift knob, Cosmo Racing intake w/ K&N filter, 15" Borbet Type A's Cherry Bomb muffler, steel braided brake hoses, Bavauto RTABs, gutted | | | 03-14-2010, 05:26 AM | #12 | | has 5.7L of v8 power Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 2,724 | Everyone rants and raves about brake bias, you can fix that with valves, master cylinders, and/or pads. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti - Parting out 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 Ls1+6spd T56 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - M42B18/5 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - Blown M44b19 with Mille Miglia MM-2 18x8 | | | 03-14-2010, 06:00 AM | #13 | | Schnell und Wütend Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: Georgia, Vermont Posts: 8,510 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma Everyone rants and raves about brake bias, you can fix that with valves, master cylinders, and/or pads. | true, but stock fronts and 4-piston rears is a little off __________________ -Brendan BMWCCA #405199 SCCV #318 Myspace '95 Cordobarot 318ti Active AKA Tina Extreme Dimensions Bomber-style front bumper and sideskirts, 18" AT Italia Inox rims, Carbon 8 cf hood, H&R race springs, Bilstein sport shocks, BWSport RSMs, LTW M-tech moldings, Dinan intake, Momo "Race" shift knob, AC Schnitzer e-brake handle, AC Schnitzer pedals, Kamei eyelids, interior Streetglow, JVC CD/iPod hu, 2 12" RE Audio subwoofers, Kenwood amp, DIY blackout grill, Vitesse Tuning CF B-pillars, Bimmian stubby antenna, smoked clear corners and sidemarkers, Depo LED taillights, 5% limo-tint, CF roundels and debadged318ti.org decal '04 Silbergrau 325xi Premium Sport AKA Trixie DIY blackout grills '84 Bronzitbeige 318i AKA Ilsa Bavauto springs, AC Schnitzer shift knob, Cosmo Racing intake w/ K&N filter, 15" Borbet Type A's Cherry Bomb muffler, steel braided brake hoses, Bavauto RTABs, gutted | | | 03-14-2010, 06:07 AM | #14 | | pro street racer/drifter Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Auburn, WA Posts: 1,254 | best upgrade is 325/328 brakes for the front, u dont really need to upgrade the rears. but if your looking for something better u can get 4 piston calipers in the front too and use the same 328 rotors or go with m3 rotors/spindles and aftermarket caliper or go all out and go with bbk in the front __________________ 5/96 318TI Sport | | | 03-14-2010, 02:15 PM | #15 | | has 5.7L of v8 power Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 2,724 | 325/8 rotors and calipers are the same as post 04/98 ti rotors and calipers. That rotor is too small for most 4pot pads, so upgrading to m3 spec is usually the best option if going that route. A true bbk comes with everything you need, usually in the correct proportion if buying a high quality, spec built setup. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti - Parting out 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 Ls1+6spd T56 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - M42B18/5 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - Blown M44b19 with Mille Miglia MM-2 18x8 | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
