How to install a glove compartment lock
by Scott
The locking glove compartment wasn't included in the 318ti until 1998.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Scott has been kind enough to give us step by step instructions.

Note: A glove box door that will accommodate the key may have to be purchased.

51 16 8 222 487 for black
51 16 8 222 488 for tan

1. Part numbers needed are glove box latch assembly 51 16 8 218 167 for $24.50 and
lock cylinder repair kit
51 16 9 061 388 for $ 30.75

2. Once you get all the parts laid out, you will see that the lock pins are numbered as 11,12,13,14 and 21,22,23,24. The 1x are for the upper side of the lock and the 2x series is for the lower side of the lock.

3. Starting with one side install the 3 tension springs in the spaces,
they go in the small hole to one side of the slot.

4. Then starting with one pin series install 1 pin in each of the 3 slots. It doesn't matter which numbers you choose, you will be changing them back and forth until you get them all smooth with the key in the cylinder.

5. Repeat step 3 and 4 for the 3 pins on the other side.

6. Pack the lock cylinder with the supplied grease and the insert it into the latch assembly.
Make sure that the key turns in the lock, if it doesn't you will need to pry the lock out of the latch and repeat 4 and 5 again until all the pins are perfectly smooth with the key in the cylinder.

7. Remove the original latch and replace it with the new locked assembly.

Hope this helps.

Take care,
Scott
