| This weekend I changed my non-LS diff to an LS Diff. Here are some quick instructions:
This is a very easy task, despite how difficult it may sound. A reasonable do it yourselfer should be able to do this in 1-2 hours easily. Tools - 19mm Open end and socket, 17mm open or box end, Torx E12 socket (be sure to find this before you start, for the axle bolts), floor jack. - Remove spare tire/carrier. - Jack car and put on stands (I jack the diff itself to lift the whole rear of the car at once, anyone recommend against this?). - Use safety wire or heavy cord to make a loop around the sway bar and each axle (you will damage the CV joint boot housing if the axle dangles unsupported). - Use the Torx socket to remove the 6 bolts from each axle where they bolt to the diff output shafts. (It's easier to get past the CV Boot if you have the bolts at the top when using the socket on them). - Loosen all 4 bolts that fasten diff to carrier (19mm, will need open end on upper 2, no room for socket). Remove the top 2 and 1 lower bolts completely. - Remove the nut and washer from the bolt holding the rubber bushing to frame at rear of diff. Leave the bolt in! - Remove the 4 nuts on the studs holding the diff input shaft to drive line. - Put the floor jack under the diff to support it (use wood or pad to prevent scratching). - Remove the 4th bolt and the rear bushing bolt (will need to pry exhaust/muffler to side). - Lower the jack slowly, tilting the diff down at the rear. As the bushing leaves it's bracket area, you can slide the jack backwards letting the input shaft slide off the driveline studs. - Now, while the diffs are out, would be a good time to change the fluid if that was planned. Basically reverse the order to re-install the new Diff. Piece of cake! The first and main thing I have noticed now that I have the LS Diff is that accelerating onto a road from a stop at a 90 degree turn in the wet is much easier. No more feathering the throttle to keep from spinning that inside wheel (no TCS)! Bat turns are easy and more fun now too :-). BMW Track Day at PIR this saturday to see if I can tell a difference there. I know there is at least one other lister in this area, come-out to the track Saturday just to look around. The format is very informal and friendly. I'm the only ti I've seen running there, so you'll have no problem finding me. Don't pay at the gate, tell them you're just observing and drive down into the pit area. Don Wentz |
