Default Oil Type, Oil Weight & Oil Filter

I do see a few previous threads on this. But just want to start a new one if you chaps do not mind it.

Current location: San Francisco, Ca
Future location: Not known (for now).

'97 318 ti. She very recently crossed 240K

Synthetic or Fossil based is better? My mechanic in my previous town used synthetic and had no trouble with it.

What grade/weight of oil to use if I want an all weather oil?

Oil Filter recommendations?

Thanks much in advance.

With Regards,
M

IIRC I used Castrol Edge or Syntec 5W40 in my ti when I ran it year round in upstate NY and it seemed fine. As for filters I use Mann and Mahle, I cant remember which I put in the ti but both are good quality.

Mobil 1 10-40 is what I use year round. I have been using Mann filters from Pelican Parts, but since I change my oil every 3,000 miles I'm going to start using Wix filters in stock at O'Reilly's Auto Parts, just for the convenience and cost savings.

Car came with 15w40 stock in 95.. But Dino oil,, I use 15w40/50 BMW or Castrol..

I believe the second number is the important one. I never run lower than a 40 oil in a overhead cam motor built before 2006. Most engines the bearing clearances are a tic wider on the older engines and I don't feel like the lubrication is adequate at low RPM

My M42 is significantly quieter with a nice heavy 15w40 vs 10w30 which makes it rattle like a can full of rocks.

Cheers
Dave

I use 0w-40 mobile 1, I heard that was the closest to BMW's castro oil.
