I was reading about these just recently...Apparently in the near-future Michelin predicts "air-filled" tires will become obsolete and we’ll all be rollin on these. Not until they figure out a way to cut down that giant sidewall, the damn things look like off-road tires.

one of the interesting points is that these tires can be re-treaded. less use of rubber, but also not so good for tire manufacturers ($$).

low-pro tires are to solve two problems: 1. stability against sidewall flexing during lateral acceleration and 2. space for larger rotors.

i think it would be feasible to stiffen the spokes to solve engineering problem #1, but it doesn't quite address #2. however, if you find a way to stiffen the spokes, you've effectively solved #2 (you can make them shorter with the same stiffness).

a few other points:
a. smaller rims = less unsprung weight = good.
b. these would make it impossible to adjust a tire's rolling resistance (through air pressure) for conditions or load. i know the majority of people don't do this, let alone check tire pressures, but it can be important sometimes.
c. it doesn't really address the issue of allowing tires to heat up properly to get the right amount of grip; it would seem that they would cool too quickly, requiring (initially) softer compounds.
