Default 3.64 diff in 97 1.9l chassis Z3...issues please read.

like it says above..3.64 LSD small case in my 97 z3 1.9L, which came with a small case 3.45 open. stock stub shafts and axles from the z3.

this same diff and setup was previously used in a 95 318ti with no issues.

i have had this diff installed in my race car for a few months now, racing (drifting) at least weekly with no problems.

at an event here yesterday i heard a clunk from the rear, thinking it was just a scrape since the car is low and i was travelling over rippled pavement at the track i disregarded it. several runs later as i shifted into second accelerating toward the course the engine tached out and i was going no where.

i limped it back to the pit and put the car up to find the stub shafts hanging out of the diff by about an inch.

i'm at a total loss right now of what has happened...

any ideas..opinions..questions...

hrrmmm.. issue solved. i drained the fluid and pulled the rear cover. all sorts of expensive looking little pieces fell out.

i grenaded the limited slip..nothing left for the stub shafts to hold..hence they popped out.

lets go another direction with this. what would you guys do to make a 3.73 medium case e30 diff reliable at say 500/600 whp? hehehehe..I have a 3.73 sitting here that was run dry (as in with no fluid) so I'm going to pull it apart and inspect it. what should i build it with for reliability with this 2jzgte that is going in at the end of the season?

Many turbo guys on e30tech have decent numbers on their medium case diffs with minor rebuilds. They are cheap enough that going crazy is not worth the money spent.

One of the major benefits of going to a medium case is its durability over the small cases. You have to remember that any car that has a small case wasn't intended to get over 150hp while medium cases were on euro e36m3's (316 hp) and can actually hand much much more(seen them on 600 hp cars). Obviously you cant use an e36 diff but the gears are the same size.

Yes the medium 3.73 was the original plan, the 3.64 small case was the savior in time of emergency. Unfortunately it was working so well for the last few months I pretty much forgot about it.

Now on to the 3.73. I have been talking to Yoshi (Promotor) about building the LSD and I have a plan worked out. Thanks for the help guys.

If you want to rebuild it get the seals that the flanges go into, new drain plug with ring, o-rings, and a new gasket for the cover. Anything past that and you will need some special tools to replace the front seal/bearings, which generally don't have issues anyway.

If the bearings are done dont even bother, just find a different diff.

will be pretty much full custom. multi clutches, machined inside, pretty sure the bearings are seized, was run dry.

Not sure about your budget but have you considered this?

The quality of thier product is top notch and can essentially do anything you want in terms of lockup, ratio, etc.
