Default Cool race video

This video was just passed on to me and I thought it was really cool! You can see he drives by several BMW's including a couple ti's. Anyone know what's making the high pitch noise? Is it a turbo?

Vid looks good. That car is wicked fast. I am not sure about the sound thoug I don't think it is a turbo, I am thinking it is Supercharger, or just some sound made by the transmission during high rpms.

SMG looks cool !!!

The car is a 320 e36 4dr. The noise is made by the SMG.

The noise you hear is not SMG, it is a sequential transmission!! I'm new here! Hi to everyone!

SMG = Sequential Manual Gearbox (transmission)

It's a E36 320. These are setup with a 6sp sequential transmission. If you look at how he shifts he pulls to click up a gear and pushes to click down a few gears. For the 320 DTM cars it is just a naturally aspirated engine (no turbo or supercharger). Not 100% sure but believe this uses the S14 engine found in the old E30 M3. However, the thing is tuned to the max and we are talking at running at well in excess of 8,000 rpm. You are hearing the high wine of the rpms (kind of like the formula 1 cars) and the noise from the transmission.

This guy does an awesome job driving this car to the limit.

The high pitch sound is from straight cut gears in the transmission which are the most efficient.

The high pitched squeal is from the transmission as previously stated. This car uses a "dog-box" transmission which means the gears are straight and mesh together head on. Normal transmissions have gears that are angled. The noise you hear is that same sound you hear when you put your manual transmission car in reverse, just at much higher RPMs. The engine code is s42. It has a block much like that of m42 but with everything else different. It revs to about 9000rpm, and puts out 315hp. Not to bad for a 2.0liter motor.
