Jason (aka STI Robot) used an Arduino microprocessor to monitor standard temp and treasure gauges in the engine. (Oil preasure & temp, turbo boost, etc...), included with a 9 hour lap timer and a acceleration gauge. All using off the shelf parts and sensors. Easy to configure and expand. It would be easy to add Outside and inside temperature sensors, Cylinder head temperature sensors, volt and Amp meters - really limit less. The display is simple and cheap LCD character display. Have a read at - Link Jason has a proto type video clip at - http://randomcrap.us/otherjustin/modes_demo.mov parts can be had from http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/pro...roducts_id=666 Sensors can be found at - http://www.ussensor.com/prod_DO-35_std.htm (I have no attachment to these vendors -it is only a pointer for your convenience) Let me know what you think Peter __________________ _____________________________ Peter 1999 318ti _____________________________ | | | 09-26-2007, 04:20 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Southern California - Orange county Posts: 978 | im gonna invesTigate, looks like a mod worth doing __________________ 1995 318ti Cosmos Black Bilsteins w/ H&R Sport, Depos w/ angeleyes and HID 5K, 50% short throw kit, Custom fogged intake, AC schnitzer pedels w/ deadpedels, leather stickshift knob, vitesse tuning Ebreak boot w/ shift boot, X-Brace, 325/328 brake upgrade, Gray millpoint leather and cloth interior, custom computer multimedia system, and Style 5 BBS 17" rims, M3 Mirrors, CF Hood | | | 09-26-2007, 04:57 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Toronto Canada Posts: 61 | lol - I thought so to. I've not seen a way to tap into the oil supply system without impacting overall oil flow. There are custom oil filter mounts for the m5x motors, but not ours. You can easily get oil temp of the oil in the pan by using a oil drain plug with a temp sensor in it, but you should really measure the oil temp in the engine, not the pan. | | | 09-26-2007, 03:48 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Toronto Canada Posts: 61 | There was a write in the forum on installing VDO Gauges. No one said it was easy mount a pressure sender - but its doable. http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/int...ges_part3.html I would welcome your comments if you think I am headed down a path less traveled. Thanks Peter __________________ _____________________________ Peter 1999 318ti _____________________________ | | | 09-26-2007, 04:25 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | I guess I should clarify. I've not seen a clean, well working, non-leaking way to do it on the cheap... I'm sure it can be done, it will just be a pain... The best write-ups say you should use the UUC oilcenter instead of an oil distribution block. Like I was saying, I don't even know if you can find an ODB for our cars. The oil center costs 100$. There is a writeup from a user "Mr.M" on Bfc where he did this on his 318 using the UUC oilcenter. It can be done, but I don't think it can be done correctly just buying a VDO sensor/gauge and running some wire. A lot of people try to do it on the cheap, and not pay for a good oil block to tap the sensor into. | | | 09-26-2007, 04:51 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Toronto Canada Posts: 61 | Great information. Thank You. I will look into this before I start. There is always something isn't there Many Thanks Peter __________________ _____________________________ Peter 1999 318ti _____________________________ | | | 09-26-2007, 06:09 PM | #8 | Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Toronto Canada Posts: 61 | Does anyone know if the Oil Filter housing from an M42 fits on a M44? Can't find any references to it [Update] - Looks like it willl fit. Part No.'s for the gaskets are the same as are the bolts. Filter is different. Thanks Peter __________________ _____________________________ Peter 1999 318ti _____________________________ | | | 09-26-2007, 07:29 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | I would imagine that it would fit. The reason I say that is because my M42 has an M44 oil filter housing on it. So if the m44 fits on an m42, I would think you can go back the other way. | | | 09-28-2007, 03:03 PM | #10 | Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: USA Posts: 1 | Hey, cool stuff. Thanks for linking me and all. If any of you actually make something similar to what I did could you post it up on the original forum post at iwsti. That way it can be a one-stop-shop for people wanting info on this. I think you forgot to post this part up (link to the original thread): http://www.iwsti.com/forums/interior...nk-thread.html | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
