Default Belts Urgent!!!

Hi there fellow ti'ers,

Can some clever, intelligent, distinquished 318ti devotee please tell a panic stricken novice 318ti enthusiast [E36 1999 M sport UK spec] when the auxillary belt driving the air con etc. and the other belt and possibly the timing belt [or is it really a chain as I have been informed] should be replaced in terms of miles?

I don't want one of the aforementioned to snap on me by any means....

Thanking one in advance!

it is a chain if the uk spec engine is a m44. so you should not have to replace that. the other belt. if it looks cracked then get a new belt but if not you should be fine

the clima belt P/N 11 28 1 743 193
tensioner if needed (can usually hear a feint squeal on initial start if aircon system) P/N 11 28 2 245 087

normally changed every insection 2, but usually only as needed (30 K miles / 2 years)

------

The m42 / 43 / 44 all use chains, and they last a good 100K miles without problems, but the tensioner and delection rails that need looking after

listen for a rattle on acceleration for signs of a failing tensioner

http://bmwfans.info/original/E36/com...1/ill-11_1564/

numbers 15 / 17 / 21 and 23

----------------------

also keep an eye on the water pump / generator belt P/N 11 28 1 437 369 (size 6PK X 1733)

this is also a inspection 2 part, but is also a very important part, as something this cheap and easy to change can cost MEGA bucks if it goes on you.. be warned

I changed all the belts on my m44 a few months back...now that the cold weather is here, on start up and until the temp needle goes above the blue mark, I have a belty squeal type noise Do you think it could be the tensioner? No noise on warm starts at all.

almost sure it is fella

try a squirt of wd on the belt. if it goes away then it is just a question of tensioning.

Dont worry about wd on the belt either. itll evaporate after a minute anyway.
