I just bought a 1998 318ti sport. First German car and have no idea what the little BMW button on ket does. I did notice there is a battery on key. I will replace battery on key and see if it does something? I assume may be for alarm? Also there is a little light or sensor or something of that nature. Any ideas on how much a new blank key like this would cost? Thanks for any help, tips, links leads etc. | | | 05-11-2009, 07:34 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | There is a LED light in the key, that is what the button is for... The OEM keys also have a chip specific to each car that completes a circuit to allow the car to start, so you can't buy just any old blank, it needs to be programmed by BMW... The alarm fob is not integrated into the keys for our cars... only later models. __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion. So basically battery and button are for the light just to simply see key hole? Damn was hoping was for factory alarm.
