Question Leaky tail lights?

Hello everyone. I'm new to the ti scene. Recently bought a 97 which I believe is the sport model, has M tech trim with an M badge on the rear hatch. Previously owned an 86 535i. Anyway, I started to look at doing something with the old speakers in back and noticed after taking off the interior trim around the shock towers that there was about an inch of water sitting in the fender well in the trunk area, on both sides. It looks like water runs down along the gap where the hatch meets the body and into the tail lights. Is this a common ti problem, any ideas on a solution? After removing the tail light assembly and plastic lens I notice there is no weather striping around the lens to seal it against the body. Is there something missing? Looking for some advice.
Thanks.

yes, there should be a rubber gasket on the taillights

EDIT: here's a pic:

it's glued on there pretty tight it seems, might not be something you can buy separate from the lens, maybe you could get some generic gasketing material to work, I'd recommend doing that ASAP because you don't want water getting on the electronic part of the lights

Thanks guys. The picture is really helpful. I was thinking about trying some kind of generic weather stripping, so I'll try that first. I'll let you know what I come up with.
