Probably feels and sounds nice though, but I just need to be shure that if I wake up tomorrow morning and decide to drive to florida in one day, I can do it with no wories. I've done it 4 times last year with the ti and I know something for shure- that's a reliable car and 35mi/gal! | | | 02-12-2011, 08:01 PM | #17 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by 318teeeye The ti rear is not strong enough to handle the added ponies for a prolonged period of time. If you just leave the stock ti rear in it will not hold up to much abuse and fail sooner than later. | yes and no... Yes the differential will need to be replaced with a medium case diff. The stock ti diff is a small case and will not hold up long to the added torque of the 6cyl swap. No you can't use a differential off any M series or 6cyl. e36 diffs WILL NOT FIT ON THE TI. They have a completely different mounting setup. The Ti uses the same mounting points and diff hanger as e30's and Z3's. e24's and e28's have the same mounting points, however the diff hangers are a different style. If you use an e24 or e28 diff, you'll need a cover off of a 6cyl e30 diff or a 6cyl z3, MZ3 or Mcoupe(not an M3 2dr, but a MZ3 Hardtop). 4cyl BMW's came with small case diffs, 6cyl BMW's came with medium case diffs and 8cyl+ came with large case diffs. You can use a diff out of a 6cyl e30, 6cyl Z3, 6cyl Mcoupe(NOT an M3), e24 or e28. Again, if you use an e24 or e28 diff, you'll need to swap the cover and output flanges. As for the halfshafts, no you don't "split" the ti shafts or anything of the sort. The ti shafts are too long since the medium case diff is wider than the stock small case diffs, the halfshafts won't fit right between the wheel hubs and the differential output flanges. Use 6cyl e30 or 6cyl Z3 halfshafts since they're shorter and are designed to work with the medium case diffs. The differential output flanges will have to match whatever halfshafts you get. The flanges pop right out of the sides of the diff, with a big ass screwdriver or prybar. | | | 02-12-2011, 08:08 PM | #18 | Member Join Date: Feb 2011 Location: PA Posts: 75 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 yes and no... I was not sure what had to be done as I new to this. | | | 02-12-2011, 10:44 PM | #19 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Quote: Originally Posted by spidertri Yeah, there is a lot of swap info on this site. Now, if you are going for big power, that's a different story. | +1, i beat the living snot out of my small case before it died. It had around 202k of autox, track, and drifting on top of my 2.5, track, drift, hard launches. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 02-13-2011, 01:22 AM | #20 | Member Join Date: Feb 2011 Location: PA Posts: 75 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma +1, i beat the living snot out of my small case before it died. That is what I am worried about. | | | 02-13-2011, 01:45 AM | #21 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Wow a whole 30hp over my engine setup... phff. There are guys running much higher power output than an s engine on a stock diff. Any size differential will work, it depends on how you treat it. Drifting and track are going to be the most abusive, as hard launches slam the gears together begging to break the teeth. Clutch kicking in drifting will be the worst, which is my style, rather than hand braking to slide it, so thats why mine lasted only 30k after the 2.5s initial install. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 Last edited by Bluebimma; 02-13-2011 at 01:51 AM. | | | 02-13-2011, 01:54 AM | #22 | Member Join Date: Feb 2011 Location: PA Posts: 75 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma Wow a whole 30hp over my engine setup... phff. Match the intake manifold to the head while opening the ports slightly. Install an intake cam on the exhaust side, dont remember how much i retarded and advanced the cams, was quite some time ago but there arent too many degrees you can go before messing it up and possibly bending valves. This is how your engine ONLY makes 30 more than i make and thats since the last time it had been dyno'd, pre exhaust setup, hot cam, and cold air. You can gear nearly 230hp on a m50vanos with s50 cams, or shrick cams, intake, exhaust and a tune, its not hard to step up to m3 level as the US S engines are watered down and not true m3 engines. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 02-13-2011, 10:59 AM | #28 | Member Join Date: Feb 2011 Location: PA Posts: 75 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma Use some kind of machine to widen the bore of the throttle body as well as the intake manifold to match. I have not done anything to mine yet besides M50 mani, headers and supersprint exhaust. The power output of that motor was just not ideal in my opinion for the price difference. That is why I chose the S52. If I would have had the extra cash, I would have went S54. Maybe next yr. | | | 02-13-2011, 02:09 PM | #29 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Hm, ok. Ive spent 300 on the engine and 300 tops on modifications to get there on my DD. My other setup is much closer to 400hp/tq. s54 are cool but not worth swapping into a ti for the price. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 02-17-2011, 01:57 AM | #30 | Member Join Date: Feb 2011 Location: PA Posts: 75 | Last edited by 318teeeye; 02-17-2011 at 02:00 AM. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
