Default engine mods?

So i've been slowly working on my car and decided i wanna get as much power (NA) outa my m44. I really don't wanna swap. I'm only looking for moderate gains. This is the first car ever that i'll be tracking, so the power isn't a big deal to me. So what parts can I use? What parts can i modify to increase performance?

look up Metric Mechanic, they can build the M44 into a 2.1L beast. it is expensive though, close to $10k if I remember right, so you may want to do something a little more mild to yours unless you have an unlimited budget

A tune is the biggest "bolt on" gain, send the DME out to midnight tuning.

Intake and exhaust are negligible gains. Metric makes some badass motors, around 7-8K though for 200hp.

Really need to make the best use of the available HP, weight reduction, and try to make everything as efficient as possible.

Words of wisdom.^ An exhaust is really only good for better looks and sound. You won't notice the gain if any at all. A cold air intake Doesn't really do anything either. If you don't already have a good suspension setup, it will be the best bang for your buck along with a set of racing slicks. If you don't plan on driving it daily, you can save a few hundred pounds by stripping the interior. OH and also a rollcage and a helmet..I'm sure you already know this I'm just making sure.

I've got alot of the areas covered, or on my to-buy list, just needed info on modding the motor. I was trying to build the top of the motor, exhaust, fog the airbox, and get it tuned.

I was talking to an engineer from VAC Motorsports at bimmerfest. He claimed that the M44 head flows extremely well, better than the S54 head and that VAC has different stages of upgrades they can do to optimize it better. Of course it isn't cheap but they have everything on their website.

Yeah, the VAC heads are ~$2K. Some gains can be had with some cam timing adjustments- but require a lot of dyno time. Metric's single row timing chain would be neat to try, and their head packages are also ~$2K

The only performance benefit of an aftermarket exhaust is weight reduction.

The intake to head surfaces can be port matched a little bit, there seems to be a slight mismatch on ports. Very negligible, but every little thing counts. Could try and find an ITB setup, but those are ridiculously priced for the gains. The sound is incredible though.

If you were going to build the top end it would be very expensive to achieve any big numbers (though possible). A tune is going to be the absolute best bang for your buck. I know vac also has higher comp. pistons as well. Vac's heads are about as good as you can go for an m44. There's a few companies that offer tunes for the m44 but I think Midnight Tuning has shown the largest gains..from what I've read.

u can get good power NA but with all the money u put into it u can just put a turbo and get way more power and if u do internals u can get even more power out of it, but if u wanna keep it NA then depends on how much u wanna put into it, u can raise compression, do the ITBs conversion, get custom tune, u can stroke the engine too, i mean u can do whatever u can imagine, put race cams, do the stage 3 head all that so i mean u can do endless things to this engine and get good power but been a bimmer nothing is cheap

Again, not looking for huge power, I've never driven on the track and I think braking and handling are more important for learning than power

Seat time is more important than any of that.
