It did it again today...on cold start, kept stalling until engine warmed up completely. Luckily there are rolling hills near my house so I can coast between stalling while it warms up. Also, a few days ago the issue surfaced when in parked engine downward on a decline (it seems colder weather and steep inclines/declines make it more likely). Unfortunately, I can't pull the plugs as I don't have my tools here (and need to stop buying tools I already have coming later). We'll see what the BMW mechanic says tomorrow after replacing the fuel filter.

I brought it to the BMW mechanic yesterday to replace the fuel filter but explained the symptom and asked him to check it all over. He called early afternoon and said no need to change the fuel filter, the problem is undoubtedly a failing cam position sensor. He ordered one and I should have the car back tomorrow. I'll post after a few days to let you know if this solved the problem.

Follow-Up: I've not had the symptom since cam position sensor was replaced. It appears to have been solved. Thanks to all who replied for help troubleshooting!

Thanks for following up on the successful repair - that makes for a better archive for the rest of us.
