Little help please

so i had a buddy of mine looking over my ti for maintenance and we were changing the air filter...as we were doing so that we noticed there was a giant tear on the bottom of the big tube that connects from the filter to the manifold.

tried going to a kragen to see if we could find a replacement but didnt find anything. he wasnt happy about me driving around like that so he took it out and tried to put some adhesive stuff on there but ended up just gorilla taping it and sticking it putting it back in.

needless to say i need to order that part, my check engine light is now on and im super uneasy about driving around like this

i think its #3, but considering on a scale of 1-10 im about a 2 when it comes to cars, i want to be sure about it. if its unclear what part im describing ill just go take a picture of the thing.

I have that piece for sale if you need it. No rips, its been unused for about 3 years 119k on it.

the piece brings cooler air in from the passenger side, if there is a rip I would be worried about the material being sucked into the motor. I would run codes on the car before doing anything further

That part will not cause a check engine light. In fact, it doesn't even connect the airbox to the intake manifold. If you do have that foam tube, your car likely has an M44 engine making it a '96 or newer. So the question is, do you have ASC or not. Is there an ASC button on your dash by your left knee? If not you need part# 13711247031 (#3 in this diagram)

If there is an ASC button, you need part# 13711433979 (#10 in the diagram). And yes, any leaks after the MAF sensor will trigger a CEL, probably a misfire code. You'll need an OBDII scantool to clear the code and extinguish the light.

ok, i am so happy i came here before i bought anything.
not sure about the ASC thing (again im a nub) but that definitely looks a lot more like the part that I need (#3). ill take a look in the morning though and let you know though.

the car is a '97 by the way, if that helps any.

If your car is a '97, I'm almost certain that it has ASC. Which means you need #10. ASC stands for Automatic Stability Control. The inlet of the boot will be connected to the MAF sensor and the outlet to the ASC valve(looks like a throttle body but it's not). Then there should be another boot just behind the ASC valve that has a round inlet and an oval outlet which connects to the actual throttle body. There's nothing wrong with using duct tape as a temporary fix. I did it before. I'd be more concerned about the "adhesive stuff" your friend put on there getting sucked into the motor. But yeah, I'm pretty sure you need #10, part# 13711433979. Pelicanparts.com and getbmwparts.com are the best places to purchase them from.

Yeah I never got the chance to properly thank you. I have some good stuff to work with to decide how to mount up the FPR maybe somewhere else.

ok took a look and yeah there is the ASC button
but, and i dont mean to doubt you i just want to make sure its the right part, it looks a lot more like i need #3 than #10. its one big rubber tube with one circle end and one oval(y) end, and a little piece that juts out and goes to another hose. should i just take a picture of it?

No need, I believe you. Perhaps your car has a different variation of ASC or someone may have deleted it. Either way, here's a pic of my old ASC valve. If you don't have this, then yes you need the larger boot

I my M44 has ASC, and it uses the long boot

Hmm, maybe it's the difference between ASC and ASC+T??? My S52 has the valve as well, but I'm deleting it.

ok went to bmw dealer and guy told me i need part # 13711247031. thats #3 according to that diagram right?

took pics anyways so that you guys can see what i mean though

said i could get the part there for $46.13
