I was on my bway home for work te other night when the motor started lossing power, as i push the accel pedal down the motor stared to bog down, so i pulled over and stoppped. car idled normally, but would'nt rev past 2500 or so without bogging down. it shut off and restarted fine, so i limped home on side streets . now it wont start at all, just cranks and every once in a while i get a slight sensation its trying to start. i checked static fuel pressure, it 44psi stays at 44 while cranking. it has spark, verified with a spark tester, good on all 4. it has a new fuel pump and filter( orinal pressure test kit was defective so i replaced the pump and filter only to find out the tester was bad. i did have it running a few days ago and verified the full load pressure on the fuel system and it never dropped below 44psi. now im lost..lol on thing is, while cranking i get no tach signal till it tries to start(random ignition pulses it seams.) Now i think the cam sensor controls the spark, does the rank sensor control the injectors. dont wann throw parts at it. | | | 01-11-2014, 09:17 PM | #2 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2014 Location: california Posts: 3 | BTW, i pulled the DME, no signs of water intrusion in the compartment, opened it up, and no signs of shorts or damage to the board. | | | 01-12-2014, 03:20 AM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2014 Location: california Posts: 3 | checked inj output. signals ok. pulled the plugs, they look like hell, so i went ahead and replaced them. still no start. after some thinking...i got fuel, spark and compression...no reason it would'nt run. ran a vac check, it was low. more thinking... pulled a 02 sensor and cranked it. it fired right up, exsessive back pressure caused by clogged/ broken cat. put sensor back in, starts, stumbles and dies, then no start. pull o2 again, cranks right up after purging cyl. so a plugged cat it was. thought i would post my findings after reading for hours different thread...only to find no answer!! | | | 06-26-2014, 01:00 AM | #4 | Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Montreal Posts: 63 | Thanks for letting us know, how do you explain no O2 codes though, you'd expect the one after the cat to give a bad reading then CEL. __________________ | | | 09-09-2014, 07:01 PM | #5 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | Same issues here! 96 Ti project car with the following new parts: Fuel pump Plugs VC Gasket Crank sensor Cam sensor New gas Haven't checked the DME to see if water got in there, but I will check the o2 sensor to see if ours is clogged too. Any other ideas? | | | 09-28-2014, 12:14 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2014 Location: Hawaii Posts: 114 | Quote: Originally Posted by domaas good afternoon all, so heres te story. Posts: 16 | Been dealing with this nightmare no start issue after replacing a cracked head. No fuel or spark. Sent it to ecudoctors and had it tested for $75 Somehow the DME got out of sync with the EWS. Had them remove the EWS signal from the DME for another $125. Tried to start it and had the same results as the video above. Turns out the overheating ruined the cam sensor. By the way looks like they are trying to use an m42 cam sensor on an m44 in the video above. It won't work since the m44 uses a Hall Sensor and the m42 uses a trigger contact sensor. | | | 09-29-2014, 12:08 AM | #13 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | Quote: Originally Posted by monko141 Been dealing with this nightmare no start issue after replacing a cracked head. No idea the condition of it. | | | 09-29-2014, 12:19 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2014 Location: Hawaii Posts: 114 | Quote: Originally Posted by monko141 Been dealing with this nightmare no start issue after replacing a cracked head. It makes sense what you said that M44 uses the Hall Sensor (aka: cam sensor), located at "front of engine" Reference: 1998 BMW 318ti Electrical Troubleshooting Manual. See below. http://wedophones.com/Manuals/BMW/19...g%20Manual.pdf Correct me if I am wrong but I thought if the DME is out of sync with the EWS, the car wont crank at all, it will just dead. By the way, where is the video? Please up-date us whatever you find out. | | | 09-29-2014, 12:20 AM | #15 | Moderator Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 3,220 | Camshaft sensor | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
