Default 318ti---------m52 swap question.

Hi guys, I will be doing this swap in the next couple of weeks and have a couple of questions. I have the complete running 328i. going into a M tech 318TI

#1 Both cars are OBD2 1997's do I need to have the EWS re aligned if it is coming out of a good running 328?

#2 Does the secondary air pump get eliminated (the battery in the TI is taking up its spot)

#3 Can I simply remove the traction control throttle body to eliminate it?

Thanks in Advance!!

#1- As long as the key transponder chip, the ECU and the EWS module located behind the glove compartment are all from the same vehicle, you won't need to have the EWS aligned. Just don't forget to swap the chip out of the keys and swap the EWS module behind the glove compartment. DON'T swap the antena ring around the ignition or the EWS reciever in the driver's side legwell. Use your old ones.

#2- You should still use the secondary air pump. Many of us who have done the swap have relocated our battery to the cargo area. This helps maintain the factory weight balance of the vehicle. Since you'll have a donor vehicle, you might as well relocate your battery since you'll have all of the hardware, positive distribution block and long positive cable. The secondary air pump is a vital part of an OBDII emissions system, why not install it instead of having an extra wire hanging off of your harness and and a CEL? The battery tray in the engine compartment doubles as a bracket for the secondary air pump on 6cyl models.

#3- You're going to need a boot for a model that did not come with ASC. You might also need to remove the ASC relay and/or figure out a way to bypass it.

I believe it is J!M that has (had) a swap manual for sale. Im not necessarily advertising for him, but it was so complete that my swap went flawless in every way. Its so nice having all the parts ready in advance and not having any surprises the day of the swap.

As far as your questions, my car had an EWS compatibility issue; bimmerworld i think makes a box to simulate the pump so there wont be a CEL for inspection; and many companies offer the boot to get rid of ASC and theres some ways to rig up a circuit to get around the relay floating around the internets

Default Swap in progress

Thanks for that information, I am taking my time with the swap and am not overly concerned at this point about too much.........well maybe the clutch. Do you know if I can bolt up a s52 m3 pressure plate and disk to a M52 flywheel? I have been hunting around to find out but have not got a 100% yes or no yet.

Do not mix and match clutch parts. Disc diameters are not the same from each of the models nor are the surface planes.
