Yep, its normal...It does seem strange, I have a 4 wheel drive truck also, and when that thing is at 4000rpms, it sounds like its going to blow, but the 318 is fine there.

perfectly normal. the only time to worry is if it red lines and i am sure your rev limiter won't let that happen. happy driving.

Got a question about that rev limiter. I have heard from this forum that the limiter cuts in before i do any engine damage, but I have pegged my tach needle (accidentally) a couple of times autocrossing. I don't ever hear the revs "bounce off" any limiter, sooo... yea, kind of freaked out by it.

While I would not bounce off of the rev limiter all of the time it should not cause any problems... I've been in situations before where it was better to set at or bounce on the rev limiter instead of trying to shift in a corner...

You can only do damage by money-shifting... Which usually happens when you are at a high rev in third gear meaning to go into fourth gear and you put it into second gear by accident... The rev limiter can not save you there.

My M44 engine (what have you got?) drones a bit around 4000 rpm, so I either like to spin it more slowly or more quickly -- especially more quickly, if I can, as the engine starts to burble. At 5000th in 5th, engine and driver are happy.

all of the bmw's that i have driven have it. I dont think it keeps you from going any faster. Just something there. not sure what the real reason for it being there is but maybe someone else could help us out and let us know.

cosmetic/comfort/whatever so you don't have to extend your foot past any usable travel of the pedal. If you experiment a little, you'll find that you get wide open throttle without having to stop the pedal all the way down. It's like having a clutch stop.
