Default BMW Factory Roof Rack - PICS

Just picked up a BMW factory roof rack from Tischer BMW. Thought I put up some pics. As expected from a factory part, it's very soild and well built. Although, I do wish the rear mounting was designed as cleanly as the front. I plan on getting a long Thule box to carry my skis.

did you have to cut the rubber next to the roof panel to mount the rear rack?

Nope. There's a little 6 inch (or so) piece on the car that is already removeable. The rack actually comes with this little L-shaped pick to pull it out. Very well thought out!

Oh yes, very. For the rear you pull the little 4" strip of rubber out of the "gutter" and place the rack into postion. Then you use the special tool that's included with the rack to tighten the rear bolt head. This clamps the rack to the car.

The front is a different system, but still easy. You open the doors and slightly peel back the rubber door seals. You'll see two little posts behind the seal. These two posts match up with the two cutouts in the front rack base. You just push the rack into place, then use the included allen wrench to tighten a little worm screw, preventing the rack from backing off the two posts behind the door seal.

In other news....
I actually don't think I'll be able to use my rack for its intended purpose. I wanted to buy a box for my XC skis but the only boxes long enough for them, won't fit. They are too long and the hatch glass will hit them. If anything, I think I need to modify the rack and somehow make a set of bars that are shifted about 10" forward of their current position.

i have this roof rack... i have the Thule fairing on it. I've looked into the snowboard holders too and its seems as though it would work on the bmw roof rack as well.

If anyone still checks this thread I was wondering if someone found if Thule bike racks or cargo crates fit. I just ordered a Thule roof setup, but would cancel and get the BMW at half the price. Thanks, Eric
