Lightbulb need an audio jack

I have to think this have been covered before, but darned if I can find any posts about it, so hear goes:

On my '97 318ti, I've got the original stereo system, which has a single-tape deck (remember those?), weatherband radio, AM/FM radio, and then a 6-CD changer that sits in the trunk. Pretty common, I imagine. It's 2011, and while I still really like the car, times have moved on, and I really wish I had just a simple audio jack to plug my iPhone into for long trips. I mean, WeatherBand is great, but not for more than ten minutes. I've tried an iPhone to radio converter, and it sort of works if you remove the car's antenna to cut down on interference, but even so, the audio levels are really, really low, so you have to crank the volume on the stereo to the point it hisses just to hear the iPhone feed. Anyone else have better experiences with these? And I've tried to the converters that plug into as a special type of tape / cassette, which is even worse. Does anyone have a solution here that work, either in terms of having a way to hook an iPhone into the existing stock stereo system, or in replacing the stereo with something else (under $100) that would let me do this?

Phil, I have a 96+ ipod adapter that plugs into the i-bus connector in the hatch (replacing the CD changer) and then mounts anywhere up front to run the ipod. I bought off CL but won't work with my early style m-bus connector... Interested?

FYI, I ended up pulling my cd43 out and use a Blaupunkt head unit now that has USB and Aux input, so I will never use the adapter kit...
